While we always try to save natural teeth whenever possible, extraction is sometimes the best option for a severely decayed tooth, an infected tooth that cannot be saved with a root canal, a tooth that is too damaged to restore, or overcrowded teeth before orthodontic treatment.
We take every precaution to make extractions as comfortable as possible. Local anesthesia is used to completely numb the area before and during the procedure. We explain each step as we go and encourage you to ask questions. Most simple extractions take only a few minutes and patients report less discomfort than they expected. Wisdom teeth (third molars) frequently need removal when they are impacted (stuck beneath the gumline), growing at an angle, or causing crowding or infection. We evaluate wisdom teeth with digital X-rays and recommend extraction only when clinically necessary. Same-day or next-day wisdom tooth extractions are often available for patients in pain.
